Tips For Homeowners

  • Always ask for the license holder of the contractor who is performing the installation or repair.

  • Make sure that the trucks or any kind of advertising has the license number visible.

  • True, a 9,10, or 12 SEER system costs more to operate than a 13 SEER. But to change it out for energy reasons is foolish especially when the air conditioner is in good to fair working condition and you are comfortable. Getting a brand new system to save $20.00 a month on an electric bill isn't worth it. In this case, a new 13 SEER unit would not pay itself off within 10 years.

  • Find out about the companies you are choosing. Price should not be your ONLY concern. Reputation is a big factor. Especially, the type of service you should expect. Remember, just because they say they are a 24 hour service doesn't mean that they are. Call a company that claims to be a 24-hour service at 11:00pm or later and see if they pick up or service you that night. You will be surprised how many answering machines you'll get.

  • Warranties are important as long as it is coming from the manufacturer.

  • If you have Hot Spots in your home, a bigger air conditioner will not do the job. A return in each room that is connected directly to the air handler (no pass thru Please?) should help alleviate the problem. (You can never have enough return air!)

  • If your looking for an estimate make sure that the consultant or contractor does a load & heat calculation. Many variables have to be taken into consideration when figuring out the proper size unit and comfortabilty for you and your family.

  • It is difficult to decide what brand of air conditioner to install. The brand does not matter as much as the installer. Every unit is designed to operate at specific standards. However, the unit will operate only as well and efficiently as the contractor who installs it. Do your research!

  • NEVER get your own permit for any contractual work done in your home. Insist on a permitted job and never pay money up front or deposits. If asked look for another contractor.

  • With the investment price of an air conditioner in today's market look to see what type of rebates and financing are available to you. Sometimes there are financing specials given to contractors during certain times of the season make sure you ask for them. Also, make sure you know the terms and interest rate of the equipment you are financing. Interest rates can be as much as 22%.
